Getting Started Homeschooling

Welcome to our networking site.  I hope you find this as a great resource for  your family.   Research has shown that parents go through several phases of stress when beginning homeschooling, and that connecting with a support group can help families feel capable.

If you are interested in homeschooling your child, there are only a few steps that you need to take to begin.   To legally homeschool your child in the State of Hawaii, you need to notify the public school that is affiliated with your address.  This can be done via letter or a 4140 form or through a formal letter to the principal of the geographic public school.  Please find out more details about notifying the school either at the Hawaii DOE Homeschool page or our FAQ page.  It is important to note that some homeschoolers choose not to notify the Hawaii DOE, and that is their family's decision, it would cause them to be violating the current law.

Parents who have legally become affiliated with a school by notification to homeschool are responsible for their child's education in totality. This means that children are not allowed to participate in classes, sports or clubs at the public school (although you can ask as some schools are more open than others).  This also means that parents will need to show record of their child's educational progress each year.  An annual report is submitted to the school and some testing is required by the school at certain grades.  Since homeschool methods and philosophies are very diverse, these vary vastly by family.

As a diverse yet inclusive group, homeschoolers are working together to support each in our goals and we hope you find this site as a supportive tool for successfully homeschooling your child. It is important to note that the Hawaii Homeschol Network is inclusive.  Our organization includes all families who consider themselves homeschoolers -- those who are independent, charter-affiliated, private online school students, and those of all religious and political backgrounds.  We recognize that when we work together our keiki benefit.
